Napoleon Dynamite and Green Foods

Friday, October 29th, 2004

Catching on the The London Film Festival fever, Kirsten , Emily and Ricky and I went to see Napoleon Dynamite last night at the Odeon. The movie took off from a previous short film on the same character. The plotline is plain and simple–a parody of a geeky lumphead in the lazy American mid-west bungling life day after day. Yet it is perhaps this simplicity that endears it to audiences. It has already won several film awards and has received a warm applause last evening. As an added bonus, the 27 year old lead star was there and answered a few questions from the audience at the end of the screening.

The dance routine by Napoleon towards the end of the movie was one of the most ‘interesting’ Ive seen since Saturday Night Fever. Gee whiz, I’m motivated to take dancing lessons now.

Is this the next killer app? Given the increasing number of broadband users, and the emergence of smarter and faster mobile devices, this might well dent the profits of traditional telecom providers in the years to come.

No P.E.A.R

Only 8 days till election day and Americans are suffering from Pre-Election-Anxiety Disorder. No thanks to tens of millions of dollars being spent in late-campaign advertisements.

To this point, Kerry and Bush are running collar to collar. The Americans have never been so polarized, and I hasten to add, energized.

Clinton campaigned with Kerry in Pennsylvania, while Bush is thinking of pulling in Gov Arnold.

Come on Bush, is he the best you can summon?

for my BIG day…

Here in your Paradise

I never knew love could be a silence in the heart,
A moment when the time is still,
And all I’ve been looking for is right here in my arms,
Just waiting for the chance to begin;

I never knew love could be the sunlight in your eyes,
On a day that you may not have seen,
And all I’ve been searching for, well words could never say,
When a touch is more than anything;

Maybe you will never know how much I love you,
But of this, be sure;
Here is your paradise, here is your book of life,
Where you and I will be forevermore;
Here is your paradise, here is your book of life,
Where you and I will be forevermore;

And in the dark night, you’ll follow the bright light
And go where the love must go,
And you will wake in the morning to a brand new day,
Take all your worries away;

Maybe you will never know how much I love you,
But of this, be sure,
Here is your paradise, here is your book of life,
Where you and I will be forevermore;4
Here is your paradise, here is your book of life,
Where you and I will be forevermore;

Einstein was correct after all

A satellite designed to test Einstein’s two funadamental theories about the nature of space and time has measured that the rotation of the Earth ‘warps’ the structure of the space fabric around it.

Comedy Night

Sunday, October 17th, 2004

Went on a Saturday night-out with new chums Ricky and Dmitri, both Law students. Since they were both new to London, I dragged them to Leicester Square and Soho where after an unremarkable dinner, we ventured out to look for a comedy club. All the time, Dmitri was cracking anecdotal jokes and stories involving various members of the animal kingdom. Dmitri’s delivery was lacking in vive although the substance of his jokes was nonetheless intellectual.

Anyway, after walking for several miles or so circling around Soho, we found a cheap Comedy act upstairs of an English pub. To our dismay, the act was fully booked. Darn it.

And so, realizing that it would be difficult to find another comedy club without prior booking, we spent a couple of hours playing table hockey instead. It turned out to be a lot of fun–as in funny fun.

We spent another couples of hours just wandering through Leicester Square. It was 8 degrees and I only wore a flimsy shirt after deciding that a full-on coat would cramp my style. Ricky was astonished to find me in that outfit. Why, even Dmitri, who is not unfamiliar with subzero temperatures in Moscow, was wearing a ‘proper’ jacket.

Equinox

But they soon realized how ‘appropriate’ my outfit was when they saw literally thousands of Saturday night party-goers queueing up in clubs and hopping from bar to bar with only minimal clothing on. One particularly gorgeous ladette was only wearing a backless top, and a micro-mini that would make Kylie Minogue cringe.

A comedy night indeed.
